Redwoods Treewalk operates on land to which Ngāti Whakaue people
whakapapa (belong).
This stand of redwoods was returned in 2009 as part of a significant Crown settlement, through which eight iwi regained vast areas of Central North Island forest via a trust entity, CNI Iwi Holdings Ltd.
CNI Holdings Ltd manages commercial interests on behalf of the iwi. Redwoods Treewalk operates under a long-term lease, generating financial returns to iwi (tribal) owners.
Redwoods Treewalk is an award-winning eco-tourism experience. Spanning 700 metres, it includes 28 suspension bridges and 27 platforms, offering a 30–40-minute immersive nature discovery.
The walkway ranges from 9 to 20 metres high, where manuhiri (visitors) encounter 120-year-old redwoods, silver ferns, and exotic forest in a serene daytime setting.
By night, Redwoods Nightlights reveals 34 exquisite lanterns, designed by world-renowned sustainability champion David Trubridge.
Rotorua Treewalk also holds Māori whakapapa through co-founder/owners Kellie Thomasen a descendant of Taranaki iwi, Te Atiawa and Bruce Thomasen of Ngati Ranginui, Ngāi te Ahi whakapapa.
